The Federation is an interstellar alliance of planetary governments and colonies, mainly united for trade, exploration, science, and defense endeavors. It consists of 310 member planets and spans more than 11,000 light years of space. It was founded on November 6, 2336 as a processor to the Space Probe agency of the U.N.I.S.S.S. (United Nations Intergalactic Star Systems Studies). The Federation's Intergalactic Starfleet (IS) consist of over 1,000,000 Earth, Chassaccan, Inseccition and Halton starships. They vary in size from 400 foot long space tugs to gigantic 23,760 foot super starships.

The Federation government is spread out over the United States. The Federation Congress is located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It is composed of representatives from all of the planet members. The Congress itself is led by a president and a cabinet which live in Washington DC. The Primary Judicial system is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Constitution of the Federation states that its goal is to unify the Milky Way and the surrounding galaxies by the year 4000. However, the Federation is almost 1000 years old and it hasn't even left the galaxy.

There are many historical documents by which the Federation is governed. The most important one is the Constitution of the Federation which sets the guidelines and restrictions of the government. The second is the Charter of Planets. This is the legal list of every Federation planet member. Under each planet name on the list is the Federation President's of the time and the planets ruler's signatures and the Federation Seal approving the planets membership. The most recent planet member is Oceaniont, which joined only eight months prior to the 34th Century Crisis.
